Why won't my car start?
1. Dead or dying battery
By far the most common cause of a no-start. If you turn the key and hear a rapid clicking sound, or nothing at all, the battery is the first suspect. Dim headlights or a radio that won't power on point the same way. Batteries typically last 3-5 years — cold weather and short trips both shorten that.
2. Bad starter motor
If the battery is healthy (lights and radio work fine) but you hear a single loud click or a whirring sound that doesn't turn the engine over, the starter motor itself may have failed.
3. Alternator issues
The alternator recharges the battery while you drive. If the car starts but stalls shortly after, or the battery tests fine but keeps dying, the alternator — not the battery — is often the real problem.
4. Fuel delivery problems
The engine cranks (you can hear it turning over) but doesn't catch. This usually points to an empty tank, a failed fuel pump, or a clogged fuel filter.
5. Ignition switch or security system
Newer cars sometimes refuse to start if the key fob's chip isn't recognized, or if the ignition switch has worn out. If the dash lights up normally but nothing happens when you turn the key, this is worth checking.
6. Corroded or loose battery terminals
Even a healthy battery won't deliver power through a corroded or loose connection. A quick visual check for white or greenish buildup on the terminals can save you a tow.
Clicking but no crank almost always means the battery or the starter — not something more serious.
